The fires of 2003 closed San Diego trails and postponed the book’s 1st edition. In 2007, more fires raged through our county and delayed the 2d edition! Both times, the author’s work very literally went up in smoke. Soon though, San Diego hiking areas began to open, allowing McGregor to re-hike San Diego trails for the book’s accuracy. In San Diego’s back country, McGregor witnessed nature’s regenerative powers. Just as prickly caterpillars steal away into darkness then emerge as brilliant butterflies to delight the eye, the earth too emerges brilliant after wildfires . . . or simply from winter to spring to summer to fall. And we can too.
